It could have worked I think. The whole only one eye visible through his mask: he used Izanagi in his fight against Hashirama. When Tobi was talking at the 5 kage summit he said he was a shadow of his former self. I think Obito works fine as... himself but before the reveal him being Madara was believable.

Nah, things could have been like the way it is now, why ? Because for the time being everyone expected him to be the real madara and before the face of obito is revealed, madara was already revived so i don't think it would have created much of a difference

lol , you see , this is why the community is so utterly wrong AS WELL , do you remember when he fought against konan , HE GRABBED THE FREAKING MASK FOR A REASON ... when he was falling... THAT MASK WAS THE "THING" that was making madara easier to use kamui
