If Sasuke doesn't need an object to teleport, why does he use an object to swap with?

I think He doesn't need to it just happens when He shifts spaces, if an object is in the area he is shifting to it switches places with him as a side effect of the jutsu, Sasuke used this to have his sword penetrate Madara

Kinda like night crawler from xmen. If he doesn't know where he is teleporting to he could get stuck inside somthing. Using an object to focus on and swapping places with it so he doesn't end up inside it maybe?
