Firstly, It's meteoroid, not meteorite. Meteorite refers to the flash of light cased by the debris. Secondly, it wasn't just Onoki, it was also Gaara's sand. And he wasn't half dead when he encountered it, he was half dead after dealing with it. Plus plot saved them. You just can't have an OPed character walking around one hitting a battlefield. Kishi made him summon it to show the strength of Madara, but also made Onoki and Gaara just about stop it b/c of plot. Though if it was just onoki only he wouldn't have been able to stop that, or outrun it.

It was very impressive but Gaara and I believe Ohnoki stopped it. Would have been extremely devastating though.
