Tosa is the larger breed. This dog fighting breed hails from the Shikoku
From the Tosa Province WikiPedia article, "Tosa Province (土佐国 Tosa no kuni?) is the name of a former province of Japan in the area that is today Kōchi Prefecture on Shikoku.[1] Tosa was bordered by Iyo and Awa Provinces. It was sometimes called Doshū (土州?) ."
Between the Awaji and Shikoku Islands, the Naruto Strait are noted for its whirlpools. Yes, this part of Japan and the Narutomaki fish cake are what Naruto is named after.
Narutomaki
Shikoku is also the name of a Japanese spitz breed that is the parent breed. Since both breeds come from the Shikoku Island, the Japanese choose the name "Tosa" to avoid confusion.
Most famous Japanese dog breed and the largest of the Japanese spitz breeds is the Akita. Of course, Hachiko
is the most famous and Helen Keller brought the 1st known Akita to American soil in Aug. '37.
If I were Naruto (while Akitas are my favorite dog second only to black Labradors), I would pick the Tosa because the dog comes from an island near where I get my name from. Also, the aggressive yet loyal nature that are of Tosas also can describe Naruto.
