Pure fanfic....but there is a simple explanation.

The Academy graduation exams could be like the chuunin exams occurring more than once a year (lets say twice)
add to this...maybe there was some requirement they had to meet in order to be allowed to take the exam. So it'd have to be something Naruto had but the others didn't...perhaps a certain amount of chakra so they wouldn't get chakra exhaustion.

As a jinchuuriki, he probably entered the academy earlier than the others. Wait! No, actually that can't be true, coz then it doesn't explain why he didn't know who Neji, Tenten, and Lee were in the chuunin exams. So maybe you can take it early if you want perhaps?
