Lee works hard, he's friendly, funny, and a good character. Shikamaru would be boring because he's too lazy and self centered. Kakashi is too crusty to be the main. Lee doesn't need no Sharingan to put in work. He's energetic and interesting, especially with his Drunken Fist martial art.

Lee talks about youth. Do we really need that for 700 chapters and movies? Couple hundred of those would just be him walking on his hands. Neji vs him would be the only good thing about that. Drunken fist possibly reappearing is the other. Other than that, nawht for me. He only has a couple of lines nearly that he repeats or re-phrases XD

Shikamaru would offer many cool missions and a cool view on them with him as the leader. He'd give orders and the view would change to another person fulfillimg their objective and that sort of thing. His battles were among the best too. Tactics. No flashy lazers.

Kakashi is an absolute beast in every aspect and his story was sadder than anyone elses.
