Tough to speculate on but a lot of his crew members depend on haki not df so maybe he was straight haki user like garp but if I had to pick a power it would be a water df giving him the power of Poseidon maybe idk lol

Yeah definitely this. Anything but the gomu gomu no mi would be fine. It's bad enough that him and Luff are similar and wore the same straw hat, giving him the same power would be awful and predictable. Naruto began to get wayyyyy too carried away with the character parallels, I would hate to see One Piece go down the same road..
