Creating an Oasis in a Southern 'food desert'
Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) -- For more than a decade, Robin Emmons felt helpless as her older brother lived on the streets, eating out of garbage cans.
She tried repeatedly to get him help for his mental illness, but authorities told her there was nothing they could do.
After he was arrested in 2008 for damaging someone's car during a schizophrenic outburst, she was finally able to become his legal guardian and get him into a halfway house with psychiatric services

Grieving Dad Helps Kids Get to Chemo
San Diego (CNN) -- For many children fighting cancer, it can be extremely tough to make it to their chemotherapy appointments.
Two-year-old Sisi Johnson has neuroblastoma and must travel as much as six times a week to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego. But her mother doesn't have a car, and Sisi's compromised immune system means public transportation is off-limits.

British Spy Saves Thousands of Jews During the Holocaust
Major Frank Foley is credited with saving the lives of tens of thousands of Jews when he worked as a passport officer and double agent in Berlin.
His great-neice, Pat Dunstan, lives in Helston and recently received a Hero of the Holocaust medal from the British government.

Taking Out the Rivers' Trash, One Piece at a Time
Memphis, Tennessee (CNN) -- In the past 15 years, Chad Pregracke has helped pull more than 67,000 tires from the Mississippi River and other waterways across the United States.
But that's just scratching the surface.
He's also helped retrieve 218 washing machines, 19 tractors, 12 hot tubs, four pianos and almost 1,000 refrigerators.

British Girl Saves Hundreds from Tsunami by Remembering Geography Lesson
Tilly Smith, 11, from Oxshott, Surrey, spotted key signs in the sea in Phuket, Thailand, that she remembered from a geography lesson two weeks earlier.

She persuaded her parents, seven-year-old sister and other tourists to flee their beach and hotel.

When the tsunami struck, no-one was killed on that beach. Tilly received an award from the Marine Society.

It is the UK's largest maritime charity and encourages young people to consider a career with the sea services.

A Security Guard Predicts 9/11, Helps 2,700 People Escape
He's been called a "prophet" for being so ready for the attacks, "the Man Who Predicted 9/11" in a History Channel special, and a true American hero by countless others.

As tragic as the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, was, the sky-blue day still held unexpected miracles, and Richard "Rick" Rescorla was at the center of one of the greatest -- the evacuation of financial-services behemoth Morgan Stanley.

If any of you guys want to share, please do! :bouncy:

Coincidentally, the Heavy Metal band Sabaton will be making an album entirely dedicated to heroes of the past, released on May 2014. I feel as though the more history we know, the less likely we will screw up the future. But that's just me.

I agree, those who forget history often repeat it.

With a beautiful message.
