I've heard the first 40 odd episodes are really bad. Can anyone provide some suggestions of which episodes I should watch, like for example episode 1 and then skip to 40+.

Probably after Tsuna gets his gloves. It gets awesome after that. Sp like the start of varia arc.

I would recommend skipping to the Varia Arc.

The anime took the original first story arc from the manga and split it in between arcs.

just bear with it. if you skip, you may not understand some parts and you will definitely regret it. its not a big deal right? just watch from the start. and by the way the anime is awesome. thinking to rewatch it once again!
