Geez...the perception of Hinata is way more deep than being shy. She had confidence issues due to her relationship with her father that caused her alot of insecurities about herself. Her issue with being assertive with people, and approaching them all stemmed from the relationship with her dad. Later on, she actually confessed her love for Naruto, and overcame that fear.
