I think Itachi could not kill sasuke because he was planing sasuke could start a new generation of Uchia clan, so he left him in Konoha to be monitored and probably find love. If not he would have taken him along, if he(itachi) could not resist killing him(sasuke) or been killed by konoha Elder(s) if left(sasuke) in konoha. So there must be a reason itachi left sasuke in konoha and not took him along.

he needed sasuke to hate him so that sasuke can kill itachi and become a hero in Konoha. how would he take him along?

Not solely for breeding purposes. Itachi loved young Sasuke more than his life and 3rd Hokage promised Itachi to keep Sasuke safe and Itachi's visit after 3rd Hokage's death was just to info the elders that he is still there for Sasuke.:shrug:

I agree that there is still something more to Sasuke being left alive than Kishi has revealed so far. Ultimately, Itachi intended to have Sasuke pursue him at some point in order to transplant his abilities and have Sasuke surpass him. However, if his orders were to kill every Uchiha (and Tobi wanted every Uchiha dead), it doesn't make sense that Sasuke was left alive, because if Tobi wanted every other Uchiha dead, he would have killed Sasuke himself. If Danzo wanted Sasuke dead, he probably could have had him killed. Its not like Sasuke's survival was a secret. Even other nations new about the lone Uchiha survivor.

I think that Tobi needed Sasuke alive to face Naruto in order to carry out his plans.

Sasuke was left alive because Itachi loved him more than ANYTHING.

However, Itachi made Sasuke hate him because by setting up the events the way he did, he set himself up to die by Sasuke's hand, therefore Sasuke would unlock the Mangekyou Sharingan so that he could stand up to Tobi and/or Madara. Unfortunately, Itachi didn't plan on Tobi getting to Sasuke first, skewing the story to make the rest of the Uchiha look innocent, and generally being manipulated by Tobi.
