Lee might open the 8th gate due to Neji's death but I think we wil survive it. It's pretty off when you do something for your rival/best friend who died a noble death and you die a noble death too by avenging him.
Lee has not been getting any screen time lately so who knows? Kishimoto is most likely planning something for him.
