pretend how? lie when? Naruto told Shikamaru to apologize to his son that he left before Baruto came to the gate. Before the hawk was sent he had a clone with Baruto that was playing hide and seek with him but then he got an important message from Sasuke and obviously thought to go there himself placing a clone behind to take care of the Village with Shikamaru.

There's a reason Boruto is made at him, Naruto is never there for them even though he tries his best to be. He should trust other shinobi to do some of his responsibilites but he tries to do everything himself which leads him to having no time for family

He tries while having a Village of many to protect and nurture I think it's understandable why Naruto cannot be with Hinata/Himawari and Baruto as much as he would like to having the Hokage duties and such but he at least had clones helping him and with Baruto that gives him at least some credit in the father department lol

Naruto could have just went to Boruto himself, but I figure he was pressed for time. As for why he went back towards those two following him, it was more than likely to protect them. I mean why would he lead the kids toward Orochimaru of all people?
