I feel that Sasuke actually does end up dying, and that's where the movie comes in. Orochimaru finally manages to get his hands on Sasuke's eyes but not only do they drain him, he has no desire to have the Sharingan/Rinnegan anymore. Thus he revives Sasuke as an edo and uses Rinne tensei and also gives him back his eyes. Revived hoodlum Sasuke goes out seeking revenge.
