It's very obviously a traditionalist political stance...It's stupid, yes- but that doesn't make it unrealistic. There's unresolved conflict in their eyes from previous eras and their erasure from history is exactly the sort of thing Civil War nuts conspire over today. They're a relic of the old world and that very much resonates with political issues we have going on right now.

I like the theory but that would mean Ao is...playing dumb on the train? I don't see any reason he'd have to lie about not knowing a thing about the Mist's development.

And I like it just as a reactionary movement to the world changing. That's what I want a lot of in Boruto.
