all an atheist is, is a person that is not a theist.

A theist: a person that have a belief in atleast 1 god.

a atheist: a person that does not have such a belief.

You cannot pray to a god you don't believe in, and then thank him when you don't believe in him... That just makes no sence, it's like praying to Santa when you know he is not real, yet you pray, so that makes you a theist, not a atheist, because you clearly believe atleast 1 god exist (because you are literally pray to 1...)

You're not an atheist if you believe in God. Atheism is a faith/belief/conviction that there is no God. But you're doing the right thing. The fact you're praying and thanking God at your desperate times means God is guiding you. Keep trying harder until it works.
