First of all, we all know now that at his current level, he definitely a kage level ninja. Let's look at some facts about kakashi:
1. A non-uchiha who has mastered the sharingan and even advanced it to MS.Hell,only a handful of true uchihas are stronger than him.
2. When it comes to on-the-fly analytical abilities under pressure in combat, I think only itachi rivals kakashi.
3. Kakashi has mastered over 1000+ jutsu and 4 elemental affinities. ( water,fire,earth and lightning...more than orochimaru.
4. While he may not be the best sensei in the manga, kakashi proved that if he is familiar with someones fighting style and jutsu, he can come up with effective ways to defeat them. He dominated zabuza in thethe second round of their fight. He took sasuke, who was nowhere near gaaras level to effectively dominating him until ha transformed.He even watched Lees fight, copied his tactics and taught them to sasuke.
5. I think kakashi could have pushed sasuke to unlocking the MS, since he attained it himself. Kakashi, having the sharingan IMO,knows more about it and how it works than orochimaru.
6. Back to point no.4, kakashi is pretty familiar with itachis jutsu,power and tactics. Really, all oro taught sasuke was a replacement jutsu and some kinjutsu, which I think he pretty much taught himself.
Being much alike when they were younger, I feel kakashi naturally makes the best teacher for sasuke.
