38 + 1 + 3 + 23 = 65

38 (when he was this old he became an admiral).
1 (one year later he got married)
3 (pirate killed his family)
23 (23 years after death of his wife and son, he lost his arm in fight against pirate)

So, 38 + 1 + 3 + 23 = 65

When he was 65 years old he lost his arm and not 33 like you said.
