Seems self centered, but when something this big comes up, I guess you'd find a flaw in everything.
But I rather do like the part about your mentor.
I don't feel a stretch in the statement you typed in either about how you've helped, and your mentor.
So that's pretty good.

That would work. Connecting it at a personal level of how it helped you overcome something, made you a better person, etc. Just go into the details of what it made a difference about to you specifically that nobody else would be able to see.

Deliver the experience to someone, how it felt, and what it uniquely and personally meant to you. I think that's a strong way to go about this.
