I'm not really a tech-guy so I'm not quite sure what kind of laptop to purchase. Currently, there are lot of window 8 models and people are saying that Windows 7 is far more superior? What kind of things should I look out for when I'm purchasing a laptop (brand names, specs, etc.)?

Well what money do you have? I'm going to buy macbook pro retina soon
Well I only have almost $1900 but I'm getting more on my b-day so yeah lol. I just need one for uni.
If u have a lot of money buy mac free anti virus.
Hm... How would I use excel on mac? Do they even have a version of excel for macs?
LMAO, sure but you can't find those at staples BR00 ;)
Staples isn't the only shop that sells laptops. Plus staples is a rip-off imo.

depends on what you want to do. PC's are generally more customizable and better suited for higher end gaming (good graphics etc.)

I have a mac since I do alot of production related things. Mac's are known to be more expensive, more "toyish" (easier user interface) and most music softwares and DAWs easily work with Macs, while there are less music softwares compatible with Windows.

PC - much more customizable for gaming and graphics (and music too though not as many options as mac)

MAC - generally more expensive, simple design, compatible with most music softwares, unique operating system

my 2 cents

I am more of a PC guy but Macs have their awesome points.

PCs tend to be more for gaming, customizing with upgrades and stuff.

Macs advantages are for people like graphic designers imo, the display is excellent.

I have a Dell laptop at the moment, it is awesome.

Specs to look for
Windows 7 (8 is meant to be a bit dodgy)
4gb of RAM I would say
500gb to 1tb of hard drive space
I5 or higher CPU or an AMD 4 core

That depends on what are you going to use it for... If you want a "cheaper" alternative windows might be better. As for the price of a Mac you can get a better laptop with better graphics, hard drive etc. If you are using it for university my question is if you know any or most of the programs they are going to use in your career, because in Mac you cant find much of those programs.

I have a MAC and I love it, I have had it since 3 years ago, had not had a single problem with my laptop, other than software not being compatible with my MAC. But if you just want a comfortable laptop go for a MAC.

Well i'm shit tired of Windows, Microsoft and my PC is like shitty as f*ck.
It's simple; if you want the best screen, get macbook pro retina (13/15)

If you want to game, get asus laptop or desktop

Ultrabook? Asus or Air

Etc

Look up the lenovo ideapad yoga, it's a great great device and yes it's windows 8 but I'll like to clear up some misconceptions on windows 8 and tell you why I think you should get one;

1. We're moving into a future where the way we use our computers is rapidly changing. People are interacting with there computer in more natural ways for example using a touchscreen and windows 8 was built to accommodate and prepare for this future. I'm a software developer so I naturally consider myself a power user however I use windows 8 everyday at work without any problems or hindrances, you just need to learn a 'few' (emphasis on that word) new basics (really just what the corners do) and that's it. Another pro here is that it has a beautiful new user interface to freshen things up.

2. Think about how long you are going to keep this computer before upgrading to something new in future. My estimates is that most people own a pc for an average of 3 to 4 years; in this case it would be better to own something that can keep up and keep your pc enjoyable in the near future even when most people are rocking new touchscreen windows 8/9 tablets, laptops or hybrids, because trust me on this (I'm an avid PC industry watcher) and most new computers produced from now going forward are going to come in a form-factor that incorporates touchscreens and runs win 8/9/10....

3. It's hella fast. win 8 boots fast (in less than 10 secs especially on SSDs), launches programs faster, stable and in general performance metrics, beats win 7. Infact win 8 seems to make five year old pcs work faster and I should know because I have it installed on two >5 year old pcs.

I wish I could go on and show you why a win 8 deal is better but unfortunately I can't (I have a big project that's commanding my attention), however, this is something you need to hear from a long time macbook pro fan and the truth is that with win 8 you can get something that is like a combination of an ipad and macbook pro all in one at a lower price point. Happy Buying!

In love

You are right I have this also MacBook Pro retina and I absolutely love the beautiful screen and seamless experience. It's the best laptop I have owned and I've had many pcs before from various manufacturers such as hp, dell, asus, Sony, and toshiba.
as much as I hate apple for being a greedy company, I'd say they make the best hardware and os when it comes to laptops in my opinion.

It all depends on what you want to achieve.

If you're going to use it for gaming then I'd recommend somthing with 4-8gb Ram and at-least an i5 processor or and amd cpu of the same calibre.
If you're going to use it for movies and other media resources then just buy one you like. Most if no all Laptops are trustworthy to run movies, play music, surf the web blah blah blah and all that good stuff.

Win7 > Win8
Linux > All
