Accel World, Set a good 30 years after SAO, same universe, different story entirely. Youll love it if you liked SAO.
This.

Accel World has quite a few similarities to SAO, and you can tell considering that the same author made them both. But Accel World is superior to SAO in practically every single way. Story progression, character development, action style, etc. On an objective basis, I have way less problems with Accel than I did with SAO.

If you enjoyed SAO then you should enjoy Accel just as much, and honestly even more so. Accel World is just fantastic overall.

As a character, yes Haru is by far superior to Kirito. Kirito is barely a level above being a one-dimensional character. He's pretty Gary Stu-ish and his personality is incredibly simplistic. He's supposed to be isolated but he seems to go out of his way to help other people in spite of that and it's pretty contradictory. It gets worse when he ends up with Asuna and she's suddenly the meaning of his life. I can understand the close bond and all and their interactions were nice, but that relationship was incredibly rushed and the fact that they instantly decided that they were willing to die for each other with almost no real relationship development is baffling to me.

Haru in comparison is a much better character. Like Kirito, he's an awkward, isolated character, but he's much more pathetic. And how can you blame him, he's a chubby little midget of all things. But as the story goes on he begins to understand himself more. He comes to terms with who he is, faces a number of trials and harsh situations, and grows because of it. He begins to have more faith himself and by the end of the anime, he's a much braver, more respectable, and likeable person than he was at the beginning. You can tell that Haru has developed a significant deal and even if Kuroyukihime and Taku steal the spotlight for badassery, I honestly couldn't imagine a better protagonist for Accel World.

How has Kirito developed by the end of SAO? He's got a girlfriend and that's about it. Admittedly he does develop some (mostly because he's practically the only character who develops at all besides maybe Asuna and Suguha) but Haru's development just blows Kirito's out of the water.
