"Jinta Yadomi and his group of childhood friends have become estranged after a tragic accident split them apart Now in their high school years, a sudden surprise forces each of them to confront their guilt over what happened that day and come to terms with the ghosts of their past."

The tragic accident is Menma's Death which the girl on the pics.
the sudden surprise is Menma's return from the dead "well not zombie" nobody can see her except Jinta she came back so they can grant her wish.

'tis a tear-jerker, 'tis..
Well, my honest opinion is that it's good for a while, but the effect wasn't really as profound on me as I had expected when I watched it, after having read recommendations.
I did cry though~

I would recommend you try and watch 'Hyouka' as well if you haven't already; it's a really good anime, twice as long as this one, and carries a depth with it which I grew fond of, very much so!
