How people are saying Joaquin Phoenix is their favorite Joker.
WHAT? HOW? WHY? WHAT?

Someone, anyone please explain. How was his performance better than Ledger's? How was his look better than Romero, Nicholson or Ledger? I see people talk about Nicholson's looking "too cartoony" have these people never heard of Joker as "The Clown Prince of Crime" he used to use boxing glove guns and jack in the box as weapons.

MY fav is hamill, I think they like Phoenix as joker cus this movie was very different than those other incarnations, but as a "Joker" maybe he doesn't even qualify cus it was different.
I think you compare him as a cartoonish character while other people just think the movie was good and since the movie was good they think that version of Joker was good.

Does that make sense?

I know some people say the dark knight was just a crime thriller where the people in it happened to be similar to Batman and Joker.

I think this movie is similar to that, in the sense this movie was very realistic, it didn't glorify gun violence it was pretty dark.
And it just happened to take place in a ficticious world.

But I think the movie spoke to people, and that's why they like it, I don't think they judge it as a "Joker movie" but more as a movie in general.

Does that make sense?

I'm not saying Phoenix was cartoonish but that's the criticism of Nicholsons Joker I'm seeing a lot of those who preferred Phoenix saying. But Nicholsons' Joker was done at a time when he was still referred to as The Clown Prince of Crime so cartoony is how he was billed.

I get judging it as a movie not a "Joker" movie but I'm seeing people say Phoenix was a better Joker than Ledger or Nicholson and I'm just wondering how they made that decision when Nicholson looked more the part than Phoenix and Ledger acted the part more than Phoenix.

hes dope, though to be fair Jared Leto really set him up for a good follow up with how much of a butchery that was. and a lot of people are hypebeasts and just started getting into superhero esque films, they probably havent seen the 90s Batman movies or dont remember them enough to have a real opinion on them

i dont think you can really compare them like that though. his acting was really good in the new one but he was central focus, it was all him so like...your acting better be good. where like Heath Ledger had to share more screentime and he was actually up against batman. i dont think you can really compare them like that, since we havent seen Joaquin's Joker in a context where hes not the central focus

like if he can still be a standout and shine in a movie about Batman, then ill start ranking them. i really liked that new Joker movie though but Heath is still numbero uno for me

I think people ignore the "Joker" as a character when comparing them, they just like this movie and so that's why.

But that doesn't make sense, to me at least. You're saying they ignore it as "Joker" but they're saying he's their favorite Joker. I feel like that's an oxymoron.

I get why people liked the movie, I enjoyed it too it's just not a great Joker story and I don't see Phoenix's performance as better than Ledgers.

Maybe they want the Joker character to be more like this.

Joaquin Phoenix did what Jared Leto couldn't. Too bad he wont be in Pattinson's movie because it would have been really cool to watch Joker as an old veteran crime lord playing mind games with Batman.

Btw his look was no different to Ledger.
  • Both dyed their hair
  • Both used white face paint
  • Only difference is that Joaquin had a make up style smile where else Ledger had a scar.
  • You can even think that Joaquin's Joker is the origin story of Ledger's Joker if it helps you in someway lol!
(Also I still wonder how Ledger's Joker would have been received if he hadn't died?)

I think this is actually the key to why so many like this version is they keep going to the most recent version which was Leto. Who truth be told acting wise wasn't worse than Phoenix it's just what he had to act out was received worse.

His look was more Ledger like but there's still drastic differences. The color scheme and the face paint design for Phoenix just don't translate "Joker". Ledger's appearance was a shock and deviation but his embodiment of the character carried the change, plus it was a unique deviation while Phoenix's is a bit derivative of Ledgers.

You can even think that Joaquin's Joker is the origin story of Ledger's Joker if it helps you in someway lol!

I don't like that thought at all lol.

(Also I still wonder how Ledger's Joker would have been received if he hadn't died?)
It would have still been received well because he brought the character to life. There's as much in his expressions as there is in his words.
