@bold: because new generations are brought forth as time passes. usually the new generation tries to progress society further than their ancestors brought it. most first world countries show evidence of this progression through history. but some just never go forward and never evolve their ideals and outlook

Technologically more developed. Our minds are still very capable of horrendous things and there's no rule to be forced into tolerance as years go by. Also, those tolerant countries just have curtains over the nasty stuff they do. We literally strive off the suffering of the poor in those backwards nations.

Our tolerance is a creation of a false sense of safety created by horrendous actions. And those horrendous actions aren't exclusive to the middle ages. Nazis, apartheid, slavery, beheadings of many revolutions like the French revolution, are all fairly current.
