The rusty thing is kind of a weak story element. Just seems like a lame excuse for not coming up with new and better jutsu. I think kishi would be better off not messing with such a large cast of characters and instead focusing on more real character development. Most of the new jutsus we've seen are these godly type powers instead of some of the more interesting ones like we got before the series decided to take dbz steroids. I also find the random 5 cent inputs from Chōchō unnecessary to the plot.
