Hell, the sage would die if Tenten walked up and stabbed him in the heart with a kunai...

Being the sage only means it's incredibly hard to get him into that situation.

We see (on panel) that Madara was hit with amateratsu and just absorbed it with the Rinnegan. We also see that when Obito was the juubi host that he can negate (not repel or absorb) any jutsu beside senju.
