Recall the chapters before Asuma's death. Asuma disagreed with his father on the path a shinboi should take. In an attempt to rebel, Asuma deliberately zigged, everywhere Hiruzen (Hokage and student of Tobirama) told him to zag. He left Konoha and stayed with the 12 Guardians for a time before coming back. Had he stayed under his father, he would've been stronger.

And Also Hidan lost when asuma cut off his head. Kakuzu had to step in.
Kakashi and co had full intel but still had a hard time. Shikamaru had to set up an ambush before the fight and he was able to do this because HE HAD INTEL ON HIDAN'S ABILITIES.
Most persons would lose to Hidan without intel on his powers.

Naruto ain't killed a single person to correct you. Killing is not the only way of winning. Also killing someone doesn't mean you won. (Itachi let himself be killed )

Asuma is not a very influential character but somebody had to be sacrificed for Akatsuki's development and Naruto's Rasenshuriken. Also Kakuzu did get into the fight. Overall I liked how Asuma's death was executed and the plot afterwards.

Meh. I like him. He was strong in his own right, trained well his students whitout picking favorites (he may seem to favor Shika more, but he was shown training and believing in both Ino and Choji) and he did all by his own strenght.
