Somehow,[ possibly DF power] Roger was seen as dead as that's what he wanted the entire world to see. But still is alive till this day. Sort off like a Madara-Hashirama reference. Madara was thought to be dead where in reality he was alive underground and died a natural death.

Gol D Roger, faked his death because he knew what happened during the Void Century and wasn't capable at the time to change the world and was going to die from his incurable disease anyways might as well get killed with a plan [ harry potter, Dumbledore-Snape reference ] so he started the GREAT PIRATE ERA, in hopes that when someone strong enough reaches to Raftel [most likely a "D"], he'll tell them the truth behind the VOID CENTURY and die peacefully with satisfaction of revealing the world's secret.
