Same could be said for Gaara too.

He was half defense half offense.

He was refrained from using his bijuu because he didn't want to loose control.

He had to save the entire village from a village killing bomb which drained him, allowing Deidara's to get the win.

Not downplaying Deidara's win though. I mean he came un prepared and used the village as collateral to take victory. It was a fair win.
