Discovery
Greg shivered as clouds of dust swirled around the rooftops. For all he knew, they could contain all kinds of radiation from that blasted nuclear bomb Gary decided to “accidentally set off.” Greg pointed to the ladder of another fire escape, where they could get back down to lower ground.
As Greg and Wesley were taking their time climbing down the fire escape ladder, Gary flew right past. Apparently he decided to jump off the three story roof. By the time Greg and Wesley reached the ground, they could hear a distinct moaning sound coming from an old dumpster, which was obviously Gary.
“Oooh, I just love bad ideas. Hey guys, you wouldn’t believe what’s in this dumpster!” Gary’s voice echoed and rebounded off the metallic walls of the dumpster.
“What? Dead bodies?” Greg asked, quite annoyed with Gary for his past actions.
“No, a secret tunnel!” Of course, Gary must have known it was in there. He was already entering the code into a panel and the dumpster began shaking before the bottom opened out. “I’m such a badass.”
Greg inhaled, then exhaled quite strongly, a sure sign that he was getting annoyed. “I’m assuming you knew about this, and where it leads?”
“Well, duh. It leads to my home, Ghoul City. An old secret military facility. You asked where I got that nuke, right?” Gary’s voice became distant as he proceeded into the tunnel.
“Ghoul City? Are we going to follow him, Master?” Wesley finally chimed in, talking a bit more than usual.
Greg stopped dead in his tracks, “Master?”
“Well yes, I’ve decided to let you be my master, and to train me and teach me in your ways of life.” Wesley seemed to be gleaming with confidence.
Greg continued on in silence, climbing down into the tunnels before ending up behind Gary. They were at the main gates of Ghoul City. Apparently, far greater than Ridgeton, it’s no wonder the ghouls ran this city. Not to mention their city was incredibly clean, it had functioning electricity, running water, and clean recycled air. It was like a vault, except there seemed to be nothing but ghouls here.
“This is my home. I’m quite proud of it, we’ve all been here since the wars.” Gary once again was smoking as he allowed them to admire his home.
“Wait, since the wars? Just how old are you?” Wesley didn’t seem to be able to respect his elders, kid should get slapped.
Greg slapped him in the back of the head, he was his master now right? “Quiet, that would make him over two hundred years old.”
“And some change, but that’s besides the point. We ghouls seem to have ridiculous longevity.” Gary lead them into the main corridor, then off to the right stopping in front of the armory. “I figure if I’m to be working with you, you may as well have some decent armament, so you don’t die and leave me stranded.”
“Thank you for your confidence in me Gary.” Greg crossed his arms over his chest. If anybody were to die, it surely wouldn’t be Greg.
Gary came out of the Armory with a single revolver and handed it to Wesley first. “You seem to be small, fragile, and overall wimpy. This should make you tougher. It’s called The Judge. It fires a .410 shotshell, and a .45 long colt. Though it might break your shoulder.”
Wesley took the revolver, and swallowed, looking at the massive ammunition that came with it. He was obviously questioning whether he could shoot such a powerful revolver. “Well, it’s better to be armed in these wild lands.”
“Uuuurgh, yeah, this one will work.” Gary reemerged from the armory again, this time carrying a massive rifle with all sorts of wires coming from it’s sides. “This here, is the Railgun M670b. It fires solid five pound shot at approximately five times the speed of sound. It has a bit of recoil.” He shoved the massive twenty pound rifle into Greg’s arms.
“Well, uh, thank you?” Greg began thinking, just how the hell am I going to fire this behemoth of a weapon? It fires five pound metal slugs at over five times the speed of sound. All of a sudden there was a loud whirring sound as if energy began building up. “Huh?”
“You may want to not fire that thing. I’m just saying.” Gary seemed to begin looking nervous.
“How do I stop it?” Suddenly there was a loud crack, and Greg was launched into the ceiling above himself as the rifle fired a single volley with one thunderous and massive discharge that blasted a hole through the ground. “Argh!” Greg fell to the ground, his shoulder hurting worst than anything he ever felt before. His ears ringing, to the point where all he could do was try to read Gary’s lips. It’s too bad he didn’t have any! Slowly, hearing began to come back.
“Greg! Greg! Listen, we have to get out of here and fast!” Gary’s voice slowly became clearer, as Greg noticed a siren in the background and a female ghoul’s voice over a loudspeaker.
“This is an emergency, the nuclear reactor has been compromised. Please evacuate to the Magnetrain. This is an emergency, the nuclear reactor has been compromised. Please evacuate to the Magnetrain. Self destruct will commence in five minutes. This is an emergency, the nuclear reactor has been compromised. Please evacuate to the Magnetrain. This is an emergency, the nuclear reactor has been compromised. Please evacuate to the Magnetrain.” The voice continued, and continued with the siren, it was deafening and confusing.
Greg’s ears were still ringing, but he got to his feet and shook himself off. Gary was pushing a pallet on a pallet jack containing many supplies. “This way! And follow quickly!” Gary began off down the path.
Greg and Wesley began following as quickly as they could without overlapping him as they didn’t know the way. “Four minutes remain. Please evacuate immediately.” Crap, could this get any worst?
Greg slowly began to wonder if Gary knew where he was going. The main power had been cut and nothing but emergency lights illuminated the bleak halls which were bustling with life before. “Two minutes remain. Please evacuate immediately.”
“Gary, are we almost there? We only have two minutes left!” Greg became exhilarated and panicked.
Gary turned around bringing a fist into Greg’s jaw, forcing him back into the wall behind him. “We have two minutes left because some idiot went and fired a railgun inside of a military depot straight into a nuclear reactor. When that Nuclear reactor goes, several hundred nuclear bombs will go with it. All thanks to you. Feel proud of yourself, for taking out my home?” So, maybe Gary did have the right to be angry.
Greg used his hand, and wiped some blood off his lip. “Just lead the way, Mr I hand people armed railguns without explaining how to use them.” Greg couldn’t take all the blame here. Maybe most of it, but not all of it.
“One Minute Remaining.” Panic set in, and Gary opened two final blast doors revealing his own personal train. They all boarded it, and noticed it was already filled with all sorts of supplies. Well that was good, they all climbed aboard, and the train instantly came to life and began to slowly move backwards.
“Hey Gary, this train seems to be moving the wrong,” before Greg could finish his sentence, the train blasted forward at ridiculous speeds, melting the tracks as it was propelled over them. Definitely only good for emergencies. As Greg lay on his back stuck at the back of the room, he noticed Gary had assisted Wesley into a seat and had shown him to strap him in. “Hrm, Gary must still be angry I accidentally shot his nuclear reactor.”
They were soon out of the city, and blasting down the ridge at ridiculous speeds. Suddenly, the air became warm and seemed to be sucked dry. Instantaneously a bright flash illuminated the entire horizon. Had they been watching, they would surely be blind at this point. The brilliant was followed by a boom far louder than the sound the railgun. As they all turned around to look, a massive ball of fire reached into the sky. The size of the blast rapidly grew, evaporating the entire city, and spreading further and further before slowing down.
As the blast had stopped expanding, it gradually began to shrink as they progressively got further and further from it. The large mushroom shape became distinct against the darkening sky.
“Hey, Gary, just how far is this train going to take us?”
“Until it stops.”
