Sake is rice wine. And it's probably drunk the most in Naruto because well, isn't sake traditional for Japan? If you aren't careful, you can get drunk fast when you drink this. Plus Asian people don't have a high tolerance for alcohol so they are quickly drunk and get pretty red faced after drinking alcohol.

pretty much sake is traditional japanese alcohol not beer or wine made from grapes

beer wasnt in japan until the 17th century when the Dutch introduced them to it (Why are the dutch so awesome)

Yes it is. Tsunade is a Wine-o she loves drinking Sake and gambling. Lee drinks sake when he used the drunken fists. There have also been a few sake references by other characters.
