I believe Jiraiya is still alive

If you remember on the beginning of his mission while he was infiltrating the rain village that he hid inside of his toad. My thinking is that he could have used that very same technique as he was drowning to what we thought was his death. Being inside of Gamubunta he is "busy" as of what Gamakitchi said. That is the reason he wasn't the one summoned because no summoning monster can ignore when they are being called out to the battlefield. Just like when Naruto first was learning how to perform the summoning jutsu when he was thrown into that trench and summoned Gamubunta. He couldn't ignore it and was summoned forcingly

Gamabunta were there when Naruto fought Pain, so I wouldn't say that Jiraiya has been inside Gamabunta since he "died", although I won't disregard that Gamabunta being busy now might have something to do with Jiraiya. Either that, or it was just somehing done to mark the whole "surpassing the Sannins" thing.

I believe he's dead but you could just as easily be right. On a desperate point what if jiraiya Is in some way related to a senju possible his father is denju but he never knew and his niece was minatos mom, who married a namikaze an had minato. This would explain why jiraiya andminato have the exact same hair and similar hair to tobirama. Plus tusnade might have known which is why she never acted him but where jiriaya didn't he thought she just hated him. It would also explain how he'd survive if he did because the senju DNA had a strong body and healing. At least live long enough to reverse summon then maybe go to the slug forest to heal. Just a tltheory of how you could be right or how is think it would go down.

well.. we're dealing with Kishi after all.. anything could happen.. plus I hope that Jiraiya would have survived his last fight.. =D
