Why not both?
Johny Cash really make's his version his own especially based on his life and how it turned out and so on and that is simply incredible.
NIN's version is VERY dark and deep and Trent Reznor really shows us those dark, deep, psychological and messed up emotions, taking us into his world and again that is simply incredible.
