I read both but I enjoy HxH much more than Fairy Tail, just because of character development and greater depth of plot and I was amazed by the concept of nen.
Each and every character which Togashi introduces intrigues me, which can't be said for Fairy Tail by me.
1.Character Development and characters in general: You can see character development happening in front of your eyes.
I will take the example of a character people usually consider weak(by the standards of character development), Gon the happy go lucky boy,a child naive in the sense of the world, developing and discovering his own personality through a great adventure by going out, he unlike Killua who had a great experience and understands the world, Gon only relied on his emotions which people consider a weakness, he is a child, who grew up on a little island in the middle of nowhere with no friends his own age. We expect him not to throw a tantrum when confronted with such a stark contrast of what was expected, and what turned out to be real? Him acting rational to me would be a betrayal of the facts that surround his life. In contrast Killua and Kurapika had their own dark moments which have made them quite mature for their age.
The thing is about Gon is that he's just a little kid. And the entire story up till this point is really just about this kid leaving his home and adventuring out into the real world and seeing how **** up a place it is, mainly by meeting people who kill for no reason and seeing how that conflicts with his ideals. Gon doesn't really have a feeling for evil or good, he is just a being of pure curiosity (like how zepile said in yorknew). This whole story is just about how this kid ventures out into the world and reacting to the events that happen to him. His character is supposed to be ambiguous on purpose because he is the protagonist of this adventure story and it is driven by his character and the character of others. The reason why we haven't seen gon progress is because this we are supposed to learn of his character through interactions he has within the story itself (like an adventure manga should be). He isn't like Killua with a history he has to overcome he just goes on adventures and interact with people he's never seen in his life and overcome the conflicts that he is faced with like this conflict with Pitou which is one of the most complex he's ever been in. Pitou is the only person Gon has actually hated and despised. Remember in the hunter exams when hanzo said he gave up fighting gon bcuz he had no hate in his eyes despite breaking his arms. Well for the first time he actually had legitimate hate for Pitou bcuz he killed Kite, the most important person in the entire world to him next to his aunt mito. He doesn't give a damn about Ging if it wasn't for Kite then he would have never went looking for him, if it wasn't for kite he would have never been a hunter. Kite is literally the reason for everything in this manga happening and is the most important person to Gon so when he died he was angry and wanted vengeance against the monster pitou. But the irony is was that that monster was healing a human when it was thought that they were incapable of caring for humans and were hell bent on making them extinct. Its especially maddening for Gon because of what he saw Pitou do to Kite the man he has the most respect for in the entire world. It makes sense for him to get mad at Pitou for his hypocrisy, hell pitou doesn't even really care about komugi he's just trying to figure out how to survive long enough to kill Gon and Killua. This situation is way more complex than oh Gon is just a mad spoiled brat. No he deserves to be mad and he should have not hesitated to fight Pitou then and there bcuz its their mission.
At least Gon can show emotion like a real human being and not unrealistically understanding and nice to a psychopathic monster trying to kill you the first chance he gets like some other generic shonen.
In each and every arc he has developed little by little and the blank book is being filled through experiences. And Gon is one of the weaker characters in terms of development, others like Killua, Kurapika, Hisoka are much more developed and complex.
Now compare this to Fairy Tail, Natsu from start to beginning hasn't had any character development whatsoever, he comes off as bland, Lucy the standard damsel in distress, Gray the standard shonen cool guy etc etc.
2.Plot, settings and Power:- Whilst setting of both the manga is great, the plot of HXH is much better developed because of its arc by arc emphasis each chapter is laden with gold if you read carefully just a recent example in chapter 348 we see a person getting tattooed
You must be registered for see images
, you'll realise in 349
You must be registered for see images
the body showe in the lower pannel is the same that of 348 or lke how subtly Togashi took a time skip(
You must be registered for see links
), there was no proclamation, it just came unannounced or like in 349 we come to know that the new continent is different from dark continet
You must be registered for see images
, and these are examples from one chapter!!!, such nuances are not found in Fairy Tail, you can just read the whole chapter in 5 minutes and you won't miss anything signigicant, ehile HXH takes time to read and overlook stuff you'll just miss the next great thing.
AS for powers the nen abilities are much more intriguing than the magic of fairy tail.
Moreover I have always had qualms with fairy tail's random powerups and how no character trains to attain or hone their powers recent example is Grey getting devil slayer magic without any training, also scaling of power is extremely skewed.
So mature, doing exactly the thing you're laughing at other people for.
And yes I prefer FT over HxH. I read the latter once and it didn't appeal to me in the least. Visually unattractive and the plot seems to be the result of a random generator, however that's just my personal opinion as what someone like's is by default subjective. Unlike most people in this thread however I'm not going to start with useless comments like "shitting" and "stomping" as that by default is a disgrace for any fan from whatever series.
You can laugh all day about how some FT fans treat FT as a god, the comments of these HxH fans, including yours, speak volumes about what kind of audience HxH seems to attract likewise.
I will give this thread a few more posts till it completely reaches the level of the bottom of a trash can, in which case I simply will trash it along with some infractions.
1. Art- as for art it has drastically improved from the pre-hiatus days, Togashi was unwell those days. But I agree that art of fairy tail is better , a friend suggested if Title kubo did the art and Togashi wrote the plot HXH will be just on another level and with a lot less hiatuses
2. Random generator- Funny , this is coming from a fairy tail fan, Fairy tail too doesn't have fixed objectives it is just story narrated by Lucy Heartfilia of her journey much akin to HXH story of Gon, it too is random, moreover Natsu and the other dragon slayer's objective of finding dragons now have been lost.
Ad hominem arguments aside, I agree with your points, but before that you too have to understand Togashi's style, it has always been random and in this randomness he creates beautiful arcs.
Togashi's mangas are bound by arc rather than a central theme, YYH was the same journey of Yusuke Urameshi , in Level E he created arc just to exploit them for comedy, the only manga of his I remember with a central theme was Ten de Showaru Cupid, which was a romantic comedy.
Also hiatus doesn't help the cause of coherence, I think if Togashi doesn't take breaks this time, you'll find it more coherent.
So therefore I enjoy HXH more, no discredit to Fairy Tail as it too is an awesome manga one which I enjoy reading, but for me HXH is superior.
I actually despise Fairy Tail, and HxH is one of my favorites.
So it's personally a pretty easy choice for me.
I could discuss my hatred for Fairy Tail all day but I might as well back up my opinion besides just saying I hate it.
I'll first talk about what's good about it. The setting is interesting, on how the world is basically powered by magic - and I think Magic is handled in a pretty cool way. I like the guild system. I like how the guild of Fairy Tail doesn't really have any cannon fodder dudes that look like average joes. The back-stories are emotional and very sad.
Now to the bad. Ahem. Hero took an actual shit all over what could've been an amazing story. Natsu is a horrible character in every sense of the word. Lucy isn't a character, she's there to simply show off how big her tits are. The story could careless about the rules that it established, instead Hero basically does what he wants and ignores those rules. I typically don't mind fan service, but Fairy Tail is the perfect example of how fan service can ruin a story. The story acts like it has complex character emotions when in reality it doesn't *ahem* Ezra.
From your Post it is clear as day that you didn't started this thread for gathering which series is best. From start of your post you just simply started to bash a series which you don't like.In my Opinion simply I prefer FT more than Hunter x Hunter.I tried many times to watch/read it but dropped whenever I picked it up.It never really attracted me in slightest & art is not worth discussing. The story is also a lackluster.Anyway that is my opinion.@Some of those Silly posts above me...seriously??You can dream whatever makes happy.
Fanservice??What??That is most you can whim about?...Ecchi in FT is only a Mediocre to begin with & did you even know the fact that fanservice in Anime getting Censored or more precisely getting removed since FT attracted audience of kids,Old People & Household ones(Majority) in Japan & a vast majority of people compared to wordwide?
I have been to many discussion sites & so far NB is the only one that got Huge number of FT Haters,OP & Bleach who hates the show whatever reason may be it is(Jealous,Popularity..etc.,) & @ Opener posts which making non sense at all including this garbage thread
Edit - oh!I just noticed that Caliburn sama solo'd another thread!
you obviously don't know anything when it comes to good writing. Hunter x Hunter beats Fairy tail by leaps and bounds. compared to Fairy Tail *coughs* booby tail *coughs* Fairy Fail umm FT is an Ant a deformed ant to be honest and HxH is like God. yeah if you seen the rest of the posts NB agrees with me..you lost

if you have a problem visually don't read the online scans of HxH you should buy the volumes as it is redrawn and looks much better and if you don't want to risk your money(which is impossible cause it's HxH) you should just watch the Hunter x Hunter 2011 series on Crunchyroll or Netflix. what you stated about the story is B.S. every arc ties in with each other perfectly. wtf are you talking about?? you simply are just a hater because Hunter x Hunter is like God and Fairy Tail is doo doo

Calls a series doo doo, an ant and whatnot, then calls people who don't like your own favourite series haters. I clearly stated why I don't like HxH while the only thing you could do was trying to make exaggerated, idiotic comparisons about how much better HxH is supposed to be compared to FT in your head. The fact that you need to resort to childish, immature comparisons of gods and ants and only resort to bashing another series with insults, can only be seen as you being in denial and trying desperately to make yourself believe that your favourite series is so much better than another series.
I find HxH visually not attractive. That's not hating, that's my opinion and that's an opinion that even several HxH fans share, I even saw one once calling it a series with doodles. Volumes? Anime? The anime and manga of the same series will by default be very different in many cases, they are two separate things. You can love a manga and hate the anime and vice versa and it should be good from the get-go. If other series can do it, so should HxH, if not well then you should ask yourself some serious questions about the overall qualities of its creator.
Every arc ties perfectly? That can easily be written as that the writer has no clue about what to write in the future, so he just makes everything up along the way. When you only need to focus on what was just directly written to know what you will write directly after it, well by default things will appear to be linked more fluidly as you are going wherever you want and the reason you are going somewhere was just written, so that makes it easy to have everything link together. This is what I mean with randomly generating a plot. Someone who knows what he wants to write actually has much more difficulty in writing a consistent plot as it's impossible to plan everything, however they know that at certain points a story should have been progressed and contain certain things. With other words they write towards points that are already set and as a result it can become difficult to make them go fluidly into each other, hence many series often have clear 'breaks' between different arcs.
As I said before some comments of HxH fans in this thread, including yours, speak volumes about what kind of audience HxH seems to attract likewise. It are people like you that give fans of any series an extremely bad name and those of HxH in particular. For someone who is glorifying a series as a god-like being, you sure do your best to throw mud on it.
