I read 3 different manga (including Monster) from the creator of this series and all of them share some writing techniques. The creator is very good at creating hype within his stories by revolving a bunch of sub-plots around certain events. Think about Itachi vs. Sasuke, Rock Lee vs. Gaara, the sixth coffin, etc. but to an even greater extent. Sometimes he does it so well that I can be let down by what actually happens (it doesn't live up to those expectations). However, Monster doesn't do that as much as the other 2. It's known for having a more "defined" story.
Go try it out, it's a great series. The pace might seem slow at some parts, but it has a fairly enticing introduction. It's well known for its main villain, from which it gets its title (Monster).
