It could be a cycle of creating wood to block amateratsu, letting go of that wood then creating new ones to block more of the amateratsu.

so hashirama's only counter for amaterasu is keep running away and stay out of sight of the amaterasu user . This is no counter at all. Basically if hashirama is just avoiding it then he would have no time to attack and eventually all of the surroundings would start burning with amaterasu and hashirama would have no where to hide. So he still loses.

His Thousand Hands Jutsu would break into pieces as we seen against Madara. It's not that strong.

In all seriousness I believe Amaterasu would defeat Hashirama if he has no knowledge on it, can't block what you don't know, he's only fought Madara's crappy array of Jutsu, he's never fought a real fight aside from the Kyuubi.

Hell Sasuke wouldn't need Amaterasu to beat him. We've seen no skill in Taijutsu from Hashirama. All we've seen from the guy is big Jutsu. A sword through the face will suffice.

Madara has shown no Amaterasu, he also does not have the Tsukuyomi as it is why Shisui/Itachi got famed for it. He has Susano'o. Madara is the weakest Uchiha apart from Izuna.

I swear NB overthinks...Amaterasu is not going to be the end of Hashi. Gaara has blocked Amaterasu. Sasuke with no ultimate defense escaped Itachi's Amaterasu. It is not the ultimate jutsu.

Just to simplify things. Gaara's sand could block it. Hashi's Mokuton will serve in the same way.
