How was Spiral Zetsu such a threat to the alliance?

We saw that the entire alliance was having trouble with spiraly zetsu and that everyone was amazed at what Hiruzen did but I dont get how the alliance exactly had trouble? They had 5 kage with them and hundreds and thousands of people. In the end Spiral zetsu got taken out by Karin, Juugo, Oro, and Suigetsu? It makes no sense. I mean yes oro is powerful but would anyone put Karin, juugo, and Suigetsu on Kage level?

The Zetsu should have been crushed. oohnoki shouldve been able to solo it.

I 'm not sure about this one . but their strength have increased as a result of these cloaks , e.g. hinata's vacuum palm , a technique considered relatively mediocre,became strong enough to repel ten tails arm
