Now, I just want to add some facts that reinforce this theory by the lovely member IKSOKRIPS and not only that. I will tell you exactly how he died.
So as we all know, Tobirama invented many jutsu such as Kage Bunshin, FTG, and probably his most dangerous/famous jutsu Edo Tensei. Edo Tensei is a jutsu Tobirama invented to reincarnate the dead, but not to their full potential like Orochimaru and Kabuto use it, because he had other use for them. They were used as walking
Now here, Madara explains that Edo Tensei was in fact made to clear the battlefield along with the caster. Now how would Madara know this you say? It was because Tobirama used Edo Tensei once Madara was closing in on him, and then Tobirama used Gojō Kibaku Fuda. Madara then used susano'o [probably V3+] since that would be his only jutsu to save him.
Another scan that reinforces this theory. Tobirama says this time I will defeat you, which means Madara survived Tobirama's Gojō Kibaku Fuda.
Now for idiots who cannot read big things, this is for you. Tobirama sensed Madara coming. Tobirama told everyone to leave, including Kagami Uchiha and said that bounty hunters were coming. After they left, Tobirama used Edo Tensei as Madara showed up. Tobirama then used Gojō Kibaku Fuda and blew the edo and himself away, whilst Madara was safe in his susano'o [V3+].
