How to the pencil work?

I just got alot of pencil. I got h pencil up to 5, f, b up to 6. So how does it work? The darkest to lightest and how do i know it all?

You forgot that you might need paper. you don't want to sharpen the end with the pink or black rubbery thing.... sharpen the other end.... that rubbery thing is called an eraser..... if you f*** up, you can erase things!!!!

but seriously.... the letters indicate hardness () and the letters indicate darkness, or the other way around..... kinda..... something....
