how to take out the background of a picture

I need some help
I've been wanting to take out the background of this picture leaving ace alone

is there a specific program for this and if there is how can I do it?
it is because i want to change the background

Use pen tool to make the ace outline and then cut it... Simple

If you want to keep the fire, use the eraser tool slowly around it with a soft brush after you get the rest with the pen tool.

EDIT: I think I'm gonna go back and try again on the fire - on second glance it kinda sucks.
