How to open an .avi file with Windows 8?

I can't I've updated my apps and tried to download codec but it always says it's stopped working. help pls?

Check to see if the app needs to be repaired. Recently, I had to have mine repaired by going to the Windows 8 Microsoft store and it worked like a charm.

Download VLC player. As far as I am aware, VLC can play any types of formats.
