1.) Creating characters with the normal Shounen Tropes (Badass edgelord/dumb hyper kid/Tsundere)

2.) The talks of friendship and a family sense

3.) An interesting plot.

4.) Loads of fanservice

5.) The heroes always win 99% of their fights

6.) Deus Ex Machima/Asspulls/Retcons

7.) One of the female leads falls in love with the MC

8.) One MC leaves to take their own path, which leads to a rivalry and big fight

9.) Consistent World Building.

So how to make a japanese-style actions series?

1. Don't be Fairy Tail or Akame Ga Kill.
2. Be original and not the next DBZ clone

With these, your shonen should be a t least decent.
^^ He got it, because we're still getting crap like this and it's the only thing that seems to survive the chopping block at WSJ.

No, go on I want to hear it as I'm quite curious. It's not like a have bias more so with Toriko than I do with HxH.
particularly the worlds they are set in and the abilities of the bishokuya/ Hunters. Toriko is set in a world where the humans only inhabit a small portion of the their planet, the rest (which they call the Gourmet World) being inhabited by fearsomely powerful creatures that prevent regular people from exploring. This is very similar to the giant revelation of HunterxHunter that the known human world was truly just a small part of a much bigger planet (which they call The Dark Continent) which, again, can only be explored by extraordinary people due to the extreme dangers. Also, pretty important, Story focuses on the platonic bromance between two guys, like Gon & Killua. Anyays, i just couldn't get too much into toriko because of those similarities.

Toriko's massive world was revealed prior to HxH's massive world. Hell, the revelation of Toriko's massive world got animated before HxH's Dark Continent was mentioned in the manga!

Toriko's Gourmet World debut...Chapter 111, Release Date: Sept, 2010

HxH's Dark Continent debut...Chapter 320, Release Date Dec, 2012

If you want to back further Toriko's massive world was foreshadowed in chapter 55. Which came out in July 2009.

The whole Toriko/Komatsu & Killua/Gon thing is completely different. Not a similarity since Toriko/Komatsu's friendship is no where near as complex as Killua/Gon's. It's far more simplistic and more comedic. The hunters system is different but I won't say you're completely wrong since Shima could've been inspired by HxH. Toriko's abilities are far more science based (gourmet cells & demons as well) and isn't like Togashi's Nen system, so the abilities aren't similar. If anything, Toriko's abilities share more with JoJo than it does HxH. Which is fine still Toriko makes it different and doesn't come off as rip off.

Give Toriko another chance. You won't regret it.
