How to Detect an Advertisement Bot
First of all, what is a bot? A bot is a program, or software developed with the sole purpose of completing tasks automatically at far greater speeds than humans are capable of. So an advertisement bot would be a program with the intention of advertising (also known as a spam bot).
So what does this mean?Spambot may refer to:
- A program which performs or assists in E-mail address harvesting, a spammer’s tool;
- A mail filter program which fights the spam;
- A software used in a forum spamming, a spammer’s tool;
- IRC spambots – see Spam in Internet Relay Chat.
There are bots designed to register to forums, and make posts to advertise. Fortunately, they are very easy to detect.
What do bots look like?
- A Bot normally will not have an avatar or signature.
- A Bot sometimes speaks in gibberish.
- A Bot will constantly spell words wrong in order to bypass filters.
- A Bot will almost never input personal information.
- A Bot will usually have a generic username, often having something to do with what is being advertised.
- Bots tend to make very few posts, and the few posts they do make tend to be within seconds, if not fractions of seconds and happen to be of significant to great length at times. This can be checked by looking at the time stamp of the post in the top left corner appearing as "Date (Yesterday, Today), 00:00 AM/PM".
- Wasted bandwidth.
- Threats of malware.
- Threats of browser/system hijacking.
- You shouldn't. Simply report them. If they are innocent, they are still advertising and still should be reported. In the end, it's up to the moderators and administration to determine the severity of the infractions and deal swift justice accordingly.
- Whatever you do, do not visit the websites advertised as they could and probably will be harmful to your computer and personal privacy.
