OT : But so far as i've seen, when you display jonin-like ability then you will be sent on a mission and if you succeed you will be promoted. Remember when the Kakashi-Gaiden when Kakashi was going on a mission to prove himself worthy to be a jonin? yea like that.

It was mentioned briefly in a passing statement somewhere in Part 1 that jounin need to pass a sort of test too. I think it was in the introduction arc when Hiruzen called together all the jonin and was assigning genin teams.

But Kakashi was already a Jounin at that point, that was only his first mission as a Jounin. Jounins don't gets tested like Genins, once a Chunin displays both mental and physical aspect of a Jounin they will get recommended and the Kage and/or Council will decide if they get promoted. That's what happened with Shikamaru becoming Chunin, he displayed the qualities of a Chunin during the last part of the Chunin exams and got recommended. Chunins are more wiser and more mentally grown than Genin levels since they may be in charge if their own team, go on missions alone, or teach students in the academy.
