History
This is a necklace that is currently owned by Naruto Uzumaki. It was first owned by the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju of Konoha. Later, Hashirama gave it to his granddaughter, Tsunade. On the twelfth birthday of her brother, Nawaki, she passed it on to him as a gift. Nawaki promised that he would protect Konoha with the necklace. However, during the Second Great Shinobi War, Nawaki was killed and Tsunade would have to give it to her lover, Dan. But during the war, he was killed as well, and Tsunade went back to owning it. At the beginning of the Tsunade Retrieval arc, Tsunade made a bet with Naruto that if he could master the Rasengan by the end of the week, Tsunade would give him the necklace, would believe that Naruto will become Hokage someday, and would come back to the village and heal Sasuke. Like most of her other bets, Tsunade lost and Naruto got the necklace. This necklace was regarded as having a curse on it and only Tsunade could wear it; since both Nawaki and Dan died after receiving it. During the Jiraiya, Naruto, Tsunades, and Shizune's battle with Orochimaru and Kabuto; Naruto was injured almost killing him. It can be assumed that Tsunade wanted to break the pattern of death surronding the necklace. Naruto seems to be an exception to this since he has worn it for most of Part I and Part II and has not died yet. Or, what seems like a curse might just be a coincidence. More recently, Naruto, in his six-tailed transformation, destroyed the necklace after it attempted to seal the Kyuubi's chakra during his battle with Pain.

Guren possesses a unique ninja art; the Crystal Release. It is unclear if it is a kekkei genkai but she suggests that it is, telling Kakashi that the Sharingan cannot copy her techniques. By using this power, Guren can summon and manipulate crystal in a number of ways such as creating crushing walls or unique shuriken. It is stated by Kabuto and by Kakashi that she can crystallize moisture in the air, therefore giving her an infinite source of weapons. The density of this power appears to be very high as even the Wood Release was unable to penetrate it. This ability is presumed very powerful as Orochimaru at one point desired it for himself.
She has taijutsu skills matching those of Kakashi, whom, in battle was having a difficult time fighting Guren with her crystalline blades. She can also fight and presumably defeat Kabuto with hardly any effort at all. As a Jonin and temporarily-relieved member of ANBU, he is highly proficient in multiple areas of shinobi combat, including tracking and trapping. During his test of his new team's skills, he demonstrated considerable ability in taijutsu and clever use of diversionary tactics. Also, thanks to his training as an ANBU black ops, Yamato has keen instincts in battle, allowing him to quickly react to threats.

By combining Earth Release and Water Release, Yamato uses his chakra to generate living plants and trees which can be manipulated in countless ways. These trees can be grown not only from the earth and preexisting flora, but from his own body as well, transforming the actual cells into a different form of life. How this relates to the suppression of the Tailed Beasts is still unknown.
In addition to simple binding techniques, Yamato has demonstrated multiple unique uses of Wood Release. One such example is his special Transformation Technique known as Wood Release: Transformation, in which Yamato covers his entire body with a wood imitation rather than using an illusion to mask his appearance. Perhaps his most often used technique is the Wood Clone Technique, a clone of him made with wood generated from his body. Because they share the same cells, Yamato is able to track its location, communicate with it at long distances, and absorb any information it has gathered by laying his hand on it. If needed, the clones may turn into pills that Yamato can use to track and communicate with whoever swallows one. Additionally, because of the cell-based nature of the technique, Wood Clones do not disperse when damaged and can merge with trees and plant life, making them especially difficult to defeat or detect. A less battle-oriented use of his kekkei genkai is Yamato's ability to generate wooden structures almost instantly, which he makes use of for his Wood Release: Four Pillars Prison Technique, a large cage used to hold prisoners and intimidate unruly subordinates, and the Wood Release: Four Pillars House Technique, a large house that can be erected at a moment's notice instead of setting up a camp.

It is because of this legendary ability that Hashirama Senju was made Hokage in the first place, and it was greatly coveted by Orochimaru. Although the First Hokage could suppress entire Tailed Beasts, Yamato has admitted to not being as strong as the original, so it is unknown what the limits of his suppression ability are. However, he was able to suppress Naruto's Four-Tailed transformation in seconds despite it being released enough to grow a fourth tail.

This ability was apparently unique to him, since none of his relatives have been shown using the ability. Even Yamato, the only person to have proved compatible with Hashirama's genes, found his use of Wood Release to be much weaker in raw power.
