They used to have daily duels when they were younger.... which eventually stopped when they both got bored of it and when Shanks lost his arm

Also if you notice when he arrived on the ship of whitebeard and he (whitebeard) threw a empty sake tank towards shanks, you should have seen how fast shanks moved to avoid getting hit considering he was sitting on his bum and not even standing.
