So this is a wild theory about how Shanks and Mihawk met and how Mihawk became the greatest swordsman.

Mihawk had been training since he was a kid and eventually became a great swordsman. He had no rivals so he went around challenging dojos and beat down every single one of them and got famous so all the swordsmen started challenging him and they were all getting crushed one by one and since none of the swordsmen were ever able to beat him he was regarded as "the greatest swordsman in the world" in comes Shanks...

This is back when Shanks' crew was very small and he was still looking to recruit strong people. Shanks has heard of Mihawk, the WGS so he searches him and asks Mihawk to join his crew but Mihawk refuses so Shanks made a deal with him

"if i beat you in swordsmanship, you'll have to join my crew"

which Mihawk agreed to (Mihawk feels like Shanks is special probably due to sensing his CoC) so they start fighting and for the first time in a long time Mihawk is actually enjoying fighting since he now has to try in order to win but neither one of them won the fight. Shanks and Mihawk separate and go on with their lives...after crushing hundreds of challengers more Mihawk realises that Shanks is the only one who can actually fight on par with him which causes Mihawk to go and seek Shanks for a duel again and again and again and again as fighting Shanks is the only thing that satisfies Mihawk.

In order for Shanks to remind Mihawk of the deal they made, every time Mihawk challenged Shanks, Shanks was always asking "you finally came to join my crew huh?" and Mihawk always said "only if you beat me" therefore the deal was never forgotten.

All of their duels ended in draws which is why Mihawk never joined Shanks' crew but since they were fighting each other so much, Shanks started seeing Mihawk as a nakama and someone who is a part of his crew the way Roger saw Garp.

Kinda like Luffy and Law...Law wont join the Straw Hats but Luffy will still consider him a nakama because of whats gonna go down in Dressrosa.

I know you've commented on this thread but for those you haven't seen it yet... here's a fan-fiction of Shanks/Mihawk

Both your theory and the one above are good but me personally I want Mihawk to have a really dark backstory. It'd probably explain why he's so serious all the time. xD

You're forgetting about Rayleigh who probably would have been the strongest swordsmen at that time
I doubt Rayleigh held the title. I think Mihawk is the only one to have held that title. Also, how am i forgetting about Rayleigh? i doubt Mihawk went and beat him at any point during his life. Mihawk has dedicated his whole life to swordsmanship whereas Rayleigh just uses it to fight. Roger had a sword aswell.

If Shanks could tie with Mihawk, then how is he the greatest swordsman?
That's something that has to be explained but it seems that Shanks is more of a haki user than a swordsman. Hence the basic type sword, it looks similar if not the same to the ones that the fodder marines have. Once we know how CoC can be used in combat, then it'll become clear how Shanks fights.

And then Mihawk stole Shanks dna and gained new power! And now he plans to put the world under an infinite hypnosis and find true peace!
