In seriousness, this is one of those aspects of South and East Asian culture that I have a lot of respect for - the use of physical violence, especially against anti-social behaviour (compared to the effeminate leftist-liberal methods common among westerners).
Non-physical punishment is a futile way to deal with people who are prone to "high-time preference", i.e. an inability to delay gratification (aka the live in the present mentality) - no amount of phone calls home and stern rebukes will deter the high-school delinquent.
The only language delinquents and criminals, who overwhelmingly have the 'live in the present' mentality, understand, is physical violence.
Physical disciplining (e.g. use of sticks or even batons by trained teachers on non-vital regions of the bodies of delinquents) and greater access to, and use of, violence by police against criminals should be re-introduced widely in the west. This is one of those things that I think everyone should take a leaf out of the book of South/East Asians.
