when i was very little, i got spanked.

after that, my mum just hrew whatever she had in her and shouted at me

now its just constant advice and yelling, which is much more annoying.

When I was a kid, my parents would just give me the silent treatment. That was the worst punishment to me at the time. XD

In seriousness, this is one of those aspects of South and East Asian culture that I have a lot of respect for - the use of physical violence, especially against anti-social behaviour (compared to the effeminate leftist-liberal methods common among westerners).

Non-physical punishment is a futile way to deal with people who are prone to "high-time preference", i.e. an inability to delay gratification (aka the live in the present mentality) - no amount of phone calls home and stern rebukes will deter the high-school delinquent.

The only language delinquents and criminals, who overwhelmingly have the 'live in the present' mentality, understand, is physical violence.

Physical disciplining (e.g. use of sticks or even batons by trained teachers on non-vital regions of the bodies of delinquents) and greater access to, and use of, violence by police against criminals should be re-introduced widely in the west. This is one of those things that I think everyone should take a leaf out of the book of South/East Asians.

I do think it's a little extreme, but oh well.

I was scolded/lectured and sometimes yelled at. But honestly, just their looks of disappointment would've been more than enough to make me feel guilty. The worst is when they would say sad things like how they're doing their best, or tell us sad stories of when they were growing up :( Any sort of righteous anger I had would then effectively dissipate.

I would normally use talk no jutsu on my children if I had any. It works well on my little cousins so it will work well on them. Hitting is the last thing I would do as it adds mental torture to the kids.

My parents just used to slap me, they didn't really use any other instruments. Although once my dad went insane and punched me hard a couple of times on the shoulder. I think the bruises stayed for a month or so. XD
