Jiraiya was 53 or so when he died and Hiruzen wasn't more than a decade and a half older than him.

Actually Jiraiya was 54 when he died and the 3rd hokage was 68-69 when he died and about four or five years passed since his death so that would place the 3rd at approximately 72-73 years of age.
