Naruto has built up so much connection to ALL THE VILLAGES.
i don't think Naruto could protect Konoha only... he'd want to be the Kage of all Nations... i'm serious =p

I am more of the opinion that Naruto and Sasuke might die by saving the Ninja World. Think about it, they would seem more legendary if they died than just becoming Hokage. That's actually what I hope would happen.
